Mr Noel Gukas, a Mental Health Officer with Plan International Nigeria in Bauch stressed the importance of awareness and education in addressing mental health challenges, both globally and locally.

Gukas stated this in an interview with the Journalists on Thursday in Bauchi.

This year’s World Mental Health Day theme,”It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace.

He notes that the celebration has shifted the perception of mental health, moving away from the long-held notion that it only affects those seen as “mad” or institutionalized.

Gukas identified stress, depression, and anxiety as the most common mental health issues in Bauchi,

“Linked to economic difficulties and the pressure of providing for families amidst rising costs of living

“Substance use disorder, particularly among young people, is another growing concern,

“With alarming reports of dangerous practices such as tramadol use and inhaling powdered bones for a high,”he said.

He further said observance of World Mental Health Day has significantly contributed to reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness,

“Allowing people to feel more comfortable seeking help without fear of judgment,” he said

Gukas emphasized that those suffering from mental health conditions are not weak but in need of support from family and friends.
