A catastrophic event occurred in Jos, Plateau State, today as a two-storey school building collapsed around 11 AM while students were taking examinations. The building was occupied by over 200 students and staff members.
Tragically, four siblings from one family lost their lives in the collapse. The heartbreaking news led to the immediate death of their mother, and the father also died instantly upon hearing about the tragedy. Rescue operations have confirmed 26 deaths so far, with numerous others critically injured and receiving urgent medical care at local hospitals.
Emergency services, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), are actively involved in rescue efforts, trying to locate and save any remaining survivors. The cause of the collapse is currently under investigation, with initial reports suggesting structural weaknesses exacerbated by recent heavy rains.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang expressed his deep condolences and pledged government support to the affected families. This incident underscores the urgent need for stringent building safety standards and regular inspection.
