The Small Scale Women Farmers of Nigeria (SWOFON) in Bauchi State, with funding from UN Women, has taken a significant step towards empowering women farmers in two local government areas of the State.

Speaking during the capacity building and sensitization of the women farmers on Friday Hajiya Marka Abbas, SWFON, National Treasurer, said SWOFON is promoting sustainable agriculture practices and contributing to a cleaner environment.

She said the training program equipped 250 women with the skills and knowledge to harness biogas energy and manage their finances effectively.

“Similar capacity building was conducted for 125 in Dass LGA on Thursday and 125 in Bauchi LGA on Friday , making a total of 250 women across the two LGAs,” she said

Mr Abubakar Dahuwa , Senior Research Officer, at Biotechnology Research and Development Agency explained the benefits of biogas technology to women farmers.

“Biogas provides a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

“Biogas technology can provide energy for cooking, lighting, and other household needs.

“Biogas production can generate income for women farmers through the sale of excess energy,” he said.

He added that biogas technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions and environmental sustainability.

On her presentation, Mrs Madina Salman Credit officer with Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) said financial literacy is a crucial aspect of economic empowerment,

“That would enable women and individuals to make informed decisions about their financial resources.

“Financial literacy can improve financial wellbeing, reduce financial stress, and promote economic growth,” she said.

Hajiya Hauwa Garba beneficiary appreciate the SWOFON for empowering them with skills that would enhance their financial discipline.
