Lagos, Nigeria – July 28, 2024

A coalition of civil society organizations and advocacy groups have raised concerns over the perceived ambitions of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a recent press conference held in Lagos, representatives from various groups voiced their worries about the president’s long-term plans and their potential implications for Nigeria’s democracy and stability.

The groups, including the Nigerian Civil Liberties Union (NCLU) and the Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI), highlighted a series of actions and policies by President Tinubu that they argue indicate an intent to consolidate power and extend his influence beyond his current term. Key among their concerns are recent constitutional amendments proposed by the Tinubu administration, which critics claim are designed to weaken the independence of the judiciary and electoral bodies.

“President Tinubu’s recent moves are troubling and suggest a desire to entrench himself in power,” said NCLU spokesperson Amina Ibrahim. “The proposed amendments to the constitution are particularly alarming, as they seem to undermine the checks and balances that are essential for a healthy democracy.”

The groups also pointed to the president’s frequent appointments of loyalists to key government positions and the increasing use of executive orders to bypass legislative approval as further evidence of his intentions. They argue that these actions are reminiscent of past authoritarian regimes and could lead Nigeria down a path of democratic backsliding.

In response, the Tinubu administration has dismissed these allegations as baseless and politically motivated. Presidential spokesperson Femi Adesina stated, “President Tinubu is fully committed to upholding the democratic principles of Nigeria. The proposed constitutional amendments are aimed at strengthening our institutions, not weakening them. These unfounded accusations are simply the work of those who seek to destabilize the government.”

Despite these assurances, the coalition of groups has called for increased vigilance and public engagement to safeguard Nigeria’s democratic institutions. They are urging citizens to participate in the upcoming public hearings on the constitutional amendments and to demand greater transparency and accountability from the government.

“We cannot afford to be complacent,” said DWI coordinator Chidi Nwafor. “It is crucial for all Nigerians to stay informed and active in the political process to ensure that our democracy remains strong and vibrant.”

As the debate over President Tinubu’s ambitions continues, the eyes of the nation are on the unfolding political landscape, with many hoping for a resolution that will preserve Nigeria’s democratic integrity and stability.
