In Kaduna, Northern Governors convened to address the escalating issues of kidnapping, out-of-school children, insecurity, and other challenges hindering the region’s progress, deeming them an intolerable reality requiring immediate action.
Muhammadu Yahaya, Chairman of the Northern States Governors Forum and Governor of Gombe State, emphasized the need for the Northern region to address its long-standing security challenges through economic and human development. He stressed that long-term economic growth is essential in combatting insecurity.
Yahaya highlighted the pressing issue of the region harboring the highest number of out-of-school children globally, which exacerbates security concerns. He underscored the significance of economic revitalization, particularly through initiatives like the New Nigeria Development Company (NNDC), and urged investment in critical infrastructure to unlock the North’s economic potential.
Furthermore, the Governor emphasized the importance of human capital development, expressing concern over the region’s large population of out-of-school children. He emphasized the moral obligation of leaders to invest in education, healthcare, and social services to empower youth and future generations.
Environmental sustainability was also addressed as a crucial aspect of the region’s future, with calls for holistic approaches to address climate change, unsustainable agricultural practices, and population growth.
Finally, the Governors stressed the importance of regional integration, advocating for collaboration in infrastructure development, human capital enhancement, trade, security cooperation, and cultural exchange to achieve inclusive growth and shared prosperity in Nigeria.
