Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has stressed the importance of prioritizing education in Nigeria’s development agenda.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary of Nakam Memorial School in Plateau State, Dogara noted that education is the driving force behind any meaningful national development

“Without education, our infrastructure will decay.

“We need educated minds to maintain and innovate,” he said

He cited Kenya’s higher budget despite fewer resources, attributing this to Kenya’s emphasis on education.

“Nigeria’s education sector faces significant challenges, including inadequate funding and poor infrastructure.

“In 2019, the government expenditure on education as a percentage of GDP was 0.8%,” he said

This is below the recommended threshold for developing countries.

Dogara urged the government to increase investment in education.

He also encouraged private institutions and individuals to support education initiatives.

“By prioritizing education, Nigeria can unlock its economic potential and achieve sustainable development,” Dogara said
