The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has pledged to award scholarships to exceptional secondary school students athletes from North East States

Alhaji Goni Alkali, Managing Director of the commission made this announcement at the North East States secondary school sport tournament grand finale in Bauchi on Wednesday

He said the commission would award scholarship to students from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe states in North East region who excel in the ongoing sports tournament

“Winners in various categories (football, volleyball, basketball, athletics, etc.) will receive scholarships.

“Scholarships will cover education expenses for outstanding students,” he said.

Alkali, represented by Director training and scholarship of the commission Mr Khalifa Lawal said the Commission has been in the forefront of supporting Sports activities in the region.

He said NEDC has consistently supported education and sports development in the region.

“To also hunt for young talents as well as promote promoting unity, peace, and regional integration,” he said

Earlier, Mr. Mohammed Salis, Bauchi State Commissioner for Sport and Youth Development appreciated NEDC’s initiative

He said the tournament would provide an avenue for the state to discover talents also among youth.

He however reminded the commission of the expedited action on plans to establish a sports academy in the State.

Our Correspondent reports that the sports tournament activities for the secondary schools include football, volleyball, basketball, long tennis, table tennis, athletics, among others.
