The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has emphasized the importance of self-reliance among women journalists in the country.
Hajiya Rashida Yusuf, NAWOJ Chairperson Bauchi State made the call at the two day training for NAWOJ organized by Bauchi State Govt on systematic reporting on social investment on Saturday in Jos Plateau State.
She urged NAWOJ members to take advantage of Social Investment Programs (SIP) initiated by the federal and state governments
“These programs, established in 2016, aim to address poverty and hunger across the country.
Yusuf commends the Bauchi State Government for its efforts in empowering women, particularly in rural areas, through various policies, training, and cash support.
According to her , these initiatives have contributed significantly to achieving the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including ending poverty and hunger, creating decent jobs, and promoting inclusive education
“The organization encourages women journalists to embrace entrepreneurship and reduce their dependence on government,” Yusuf said
Also Speaking , Plateau State, NAWOJ Chairperson, Ayuku Manaseh Pwamso, highlighted the challenges women face, including gender disparities, violence, and limited access to education and healthcare.
“Girls face discrimination from birth, with limited access to formal education and economic empowerment.
“Women bear the brunt of childbearing and household duties, facing segregation at work and wage disparity.
“Women lack access to financial resources, hindering their ability to start and grow businesses,”
She added that by investing in women it aims to reduce gender-based violence, increase political and social participation, and accelerate the transition towards a more gender-equal society
