The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANT) and the Bauchi State Agricultural Development Program (BSADP) empowered 150 farmers on backyard gardening and dry season farming.
They jointly organised a one-day training workshop that drew 150 women and youths from across the 20 local government areas of the State on Monday
The State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Ilyasu Aliyu Gital, commended the initiative, emphasising the importance of backyard gardening as a consistent farming system worldwide.
He noted that traders empowering farmers to produce more is crucial for national development, as most trade depends on agricultural output.
According to him the workshop would equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to enhance food production, create employment opportunities, and combat hunger.
On his part, BSADP Program Manager, Ya’u Muhammad, emphasized the need for backyard gardening, especially in Northern Nigeria, where farmers face challenges such as erratic rainfall and flooding.
“Our aim is to equip youths and women with the knowledge of backyard farming to enhance food production, create employment opportunities, and combat hunger,” he noted.
On her part, Hajiya Hauwa’u the NANT’s Northeast Zonal Coordinator, explained that the training was designed to support petty traders who had lost their businesses due to economic challenges.
“After engaging with traders, we discovered that many were struggling and inactive. Since farming is the foundation of all trades,
“We decided to empower them with skills in backyard gardening, which requires minimal capital. We hope this will help them restart their businesses,” she stated.
Participant Rebecca Yusuf highlighted the economic benefits of the training.
“Times are hard, but I have now learned a simple way to improve my family’s livelihood. Utilizing my backyard for farming will provide food for my household,” she said.
