The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, in collaboration with the Bauchi State Government, has donated food and non-food items to 2000 households affected by the 2024 flood disaster in Bauchi State.
Dr. Omar Touray, ECOWAS President, represented by Director ECOWAS Commission Dr. Sintiki Tarfa, stated this at the grand finale of the ECOWAS Flood response project on Wednesday in Bauchi.
He said the commission donated food items worth over ₦320 million to 1000 households, while the Bauchi State Government supported another 1000 households with relief items.
“The relief items included food Items, 25 kilograms of rice, 15 kilograms of beans,15 kilograms of garri, 5 litres of vegetable oil, 5 litres of palm oil.
Others are non-food Items including, Mosquito-treated net, Blanket, Bucket, Mat and each household also received a cash transfer of ₦75,000,” he said.
According to Touray,The ECOWAS Emergency Flood Response program, which commenced on December 15, 2024, has supported 850 households across several local government areas in Bauchi State, including Katagum, Jama’are, Zaki, Gamawa, Giade, and Kirfi.
In a remark, Gov. Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, represented by Alhaji Aminu Hammayo, Secretary to the State Government, thanked the ECOWAS Commission for its continued support and urged beneficiaries to use the donations judiciously to support their families and alleviate their suffering.
He said the state governmenti also replicate ECOWAS by supporting another set 1000 households affected with flood disaster with same food and non food items in Bauchi local government area
The Nigerian Red Cross Society, led by President Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, has also been actively involved in providing emergency relief to flood-affected households in Bauchi State.
“Flooding has led to displacement of communities, destruction of homes, and left many without access to clean water, food, and shelter,
“The situation on the ground is critical, with many families struggling to survive. In the wake of this disaster,
“The Nigerian Red Cross is on the front lines, delivering emergency relief such as food, water, and first aid, and providing temporary shelter to those who have lost their homes.” Prince Adeaga said.
A beneficiary Laraba Hassan expressed their gratitude to the donors and promised to make good use of the relief items.
“This donation is a lifeline for us, “We have lost everything, and this support will help us to start rebuilding our lives.
