Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, has identified decades of poor leadership, systemic corruption, and diversion of local government funds as major factors contributing to Nigeria’s current economic crisis.

Speaking at the 14th convocation of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo state, Dogara emphasized that the country’s problems are a result of weak, wasteful, and visionless leadership at all levels of government.

“Nigeria’s economy has been plagued by various challenges, including a high unemployment rate of over 33% and nearly 60% youth unemployment.

“The country’s over-reliance on oil revenue, removal of fuel subsidy, and astronomical increase in interest rates have also contributed to the economic crisis.

Dogara commended President Tinubu’s push for financial autonomy for Local Government Areas (LGAs) and his proposed tax reforms.

He emphasized the need for effective leadership to address the country’s challenges,

“It is the lack of leadership that plunged us into the mess we are in right now… and it is effective leadership that will move us out of here.

“To address Nigeria’s economic challenges, Dogara advocated for bold, decisive, and coordinated actions across multiple fronts,” he said.

He emphasized the importance of education, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence in building a better Nigeria.
