‘Chemicals dangerous for food storage and preservation’, NOA Bauchi Director sensitizes residents

The Bauchi State Director of National Orientation Agency (NOA) Mrs. Theresa Omaga has cautioned residents of the state that using Chemicals and other insecticide in preservation and storage of food items is dangerous, harmful and detrimental people’s health.

Mrs Omaga raised the concern over the weekend at Soro Grains/Corn Market and the District Head Palace of Soro all in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of Bauchi state during a sensitization campaign on the effects of bad storage and preservation of food items.

She maintained that, research by medical experts revealed that numerous health issues such as Cancer, Diarrhea, Ozone layer depletion, Respiratory problems, Birth defects and Nutrients loss.

She further noted that other environmental harmful effects of using Chemicals are; contamination of soil, water and air harming ecosystem and wildlife.

The Bauchi State NOA Boss emphasized that, proper storage and Preservation of crops are essential to maintain their quality, reduce spoilage and ensure food safety, while appealing to people to always adopt healthy ways to store and preserved their crops.

Mrs Omaga recommended some of those healthy preservation and storage approach to include AirTight containers, like, leather, jerrican, Glass jar, plastic bin, buckets, Barrels, Sanitation and hygiene storage, Air drying, Sun drying, Machine drying, Refrigeration, Cool storage, Ice storage and Silos.

In his part, the NAFDAC Bauchi State Coordinator Alhaji Hamis Yahaya pointed that, it is part of the NAFDAC mandate to ensure that Only certified and healthy food and drugs are in the market for public consumption.

Representated by its staff Mr. Mallah Bari the NAFDAC boss appeals to the people to use the messages brought to them by the NOA Bauchi State Directorate Boss for their own safety and benefits.

Also speaking, the District Head of Ganjuwa Village represented by Alhaji Haruna A. Hussain – appreciated the Bauchi State NOA Director for the timely sensitization promising to step it down to his subject through Imams and Pastors, in the Churches and Masjid.
