The Bauchi State House of Assembly has called on the state government to take immediate action to address the perennial floods that have been causing widespread destruction and displacement across the state.
The lawmakers made the plea after receiving reports from various constituencies about the devastating impact of the floods, which have resulted in loss of lives, properties, and livelihoods.
Lawmakers from affected areas shared harrowing accounts of the floods’ impact, including the destruction of houses, animals, and food worth millions of naira.
They attributed the flooding to human activities such as construction in flood-prone areas and inadequate drainage systems.
The Speaker, Abubakar Y. Sulaiman made recommendations to the state government, including the construction of large waterways in affected areas and collaboration with relevant agencies to develop strategies to mitigate the floods.
The lawmakers also appealed to the state Emergency Management Agency to provide aid to the victims.
The assembly’s call to action comes as the state grapples with the aftermath of the floods, which have displaced thousands and claimed lives.
