The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has criticized the Federal Government’s 35 percent pay increase for civil servants, labeling it as deceitful, and insisting that the living wage should be set at N615,000.

Ajaero made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Wednesday. He highlighted that discussions on the new minimum wage, which expired on April 18, were supposed to have been concluded, but the government failed to reconvene the adjourned meeting.

Regarding the recent announcement of the pay rise, Ajaero expressed concern, stating that it appears mischievous as there hasn’t been any actual wage increase discussed and agreed upon by the relevant parties.

He further explained that the organised labour has reached a consensus on N615,000 as the living wage for civil servants. This figure, he elaborated, takes into account various essential expenses such as housing and accommodation, electricity, utilities, and fuel costs.
