The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has condemned in strong terms the assault on a corps member by individuals identified as vigilantes in Anambra State, describing the incident as both unfortunate and unacceptable.
According to the agency, it is regrettable that persons expected to uphold the dignity and security of Nigerians would act in such a manner that is “grossly irresponsible” and damaging to public trust.
Quoting the Director General of NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the agency said the act not only violated the rights and dignity of the corps member but also ran contrary to the principles of accountability and mutual respect enshrined in the National Values Charter.
“The abuse of power, particularly against youth corps members who serve in the national interest, undermines the very foundation of our collective values. Leaders are expected to guarantee accountability and set an example, while citizens must demonstrate duty of care and respect towards one another,” the statement read in part.
The NOA further noted that the Nigerian Promise emphasizes service, accountability, and leadership by example, stressing that those entrusted with authority must live up to these responsibilities.
The agency also commended the Anambra State Government for its swift response to the incident, urging that all individuals involved should be diligently prosecuted to ensure justice for the assaulted corps member.
“Such images and incidents severely tarnish our nation’s reputation. Every citizen has a responsibility to uphold and project the positive image of Nigeria. Our national reputational asset is sacrosanct and must not be undermined by the actions of a few,” the statement added.
Bala Musa, Director of Communication and Media at NOA, who signed the statement, emphasized that the incident must serve as a wake-up call to prevent similar occurrences in the future. “Enough is enough,” he declared
