The Bauchi State Office of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) has called on the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State chapter, to incorporate the 17 SDG goals into their media content to drive awareness and action.

This appeal was made by Mrs. Lydia Shehu, Director General of the Bauchi SDG Office, during a one-day capacity-building training for female journalists on SDG and the media.

The event, held on Friday in Bauchi, was organized by NAWOJ with support from the Special Adviser to Governor Bala Mohammed on Media and Communication.

Shehu emphasized that media content plays a vital role in promoting gender equality and other key SDG goals.

She noted that all 17 SDGs have a direct impact on women and called for a renewed focus on gender equality to enhance women’s participation in all sectors.

“Gender equality is not about physical strength but intelligence; women need to be at decision-making tables,” she stated.

She also urged journalists to adopt innovative approaches, saying,
“Let us diversify and break barriers; we cannot use yesterday’s methods to solve today’s problems.”she said

Shehu expressed concerns over the limited dissemination of information on sustainable goals, policies, and programs in the state, stressing the need for better communication strategies.

In her presentation, Dr. Sabatu Danladi highlighted the importance of mentorship among female journalists.

She called for strengthened partnerships in capacity building, mentorship, and idea exchange to enhance media coverage of SDG-related issues.

Earlier, the Chairperson of NAWOJ, Bauchi Chapter, Mrs. Rashida Yusuf, stated that the training was part of the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations.

She noted that equipping female journalists with SDG knowledge would empower them to promote gender equality, governance participation, and peacebuilding through various media platforms.

She reaffirmed NAWOJ’s commitment to advocating for women’s issues and called for more capacity-building initiatives to enhance members’ contributions to social responsibility.

The event featured the presentation of gifts to NAWOJ members in recognition of their dedication and resilience in advancing the association’s objectives.

In a related development, as part of the IWD commemoration, Mr. Mu’azu Hardawa presented an Award of Excellence to the NAWOJ State Chairperson, Mrs. Rashida Yusuf, for her outstanding contributions to journalism.
