Bauchi unveils the maiden meeting of the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Multi-Sectoral Coordination Forum, bringing together key stakeholders to advance efforts toward a healthier and more sustainable environment.
Speaking at the forum on Thursday, Mr. Mashat Mallo, State Team Lead of WaterAid Nigeria, emphasised the initiative’s goal of achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
He highlighted the importance of ensuring safely managed sanitation and fostering a climate-resilient environment to curb the spread of infectious diseases.
Mallo commended the state’s commitment to improving WASH services through collaboration and sustainable strategies.
“By aligning efforts, mobilizing resources, and strengthening community engagement, the forum aims to achieve its goals and promote a healthier environment for all,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Water Resources, Mr. Samaila Tela, underscored WASH’s critical role in public health.
He urged stakeholders to support the state’s efforts in key thematic areas such as health, climate change, agriculture, and education.
“This collective effort is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents and reduce the risk of infectious diseases,” Tela stated.
Similarly, Mr. Abdulsalam Abdullahi, UNICEF WASH representative, commended Bauchi State for its dedication to enhancing WASH service.
“We pledge to support the state in achieving its goals, particularly in rural areas where access to clean water and sanitation remains a challenge,” he assured.
Also speaking, Mr. Nicole Kankani, representing Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), lauded the state government’s commitment to WASH improvement.
He pledged continued support in promoting community engagement and participation in sanitation initiatives, particularly in underserved areas.
The forum, organized by the Bauchi State Government in collaboration with WaterAid Nigeria and UNICEF, convened stakeholders from relevant ministries, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the WASH Media Network.
