Dr. Hassan Shuaibu Musa, a renowned public health expert and Head of the Department of Standard Quality Assurance at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Bauchi State Office, has underscored the significance of universal health coverage (UHC) in ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for all Nigerians.

Dr. Hassan in an interview with our Correspondent in Bauchi highlighted the historical evolution of UHC,

He traced its origins to Germany’s 1883 health insurance model, which inspired the introduction of the National Health Insurance in the United Kingdom in 1911 and the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948.

According to Dr. Musa UHC is a global health initiative that ensures access to a comprehensive range of quality healthcare services without financial hardship.

It encompasses health promotion, disease prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care, ensuring healthcare is accessible to everyone whenever and wherever needed.

Dr.Musa stressed that UHC is recognized as a fundamental human right, as enshrined in the World Health Organization (WHO) constitution.

He highlighted the broader benefits of UHC, including its role in reducing financial burdens on families, strengthening primary healthcare systems, and fostering community engagement.

“UHC is not just a healthcare initiative, but a critical pathway to achieving social equity, economic growth, and sustainable national development.

Dr. Hassan emphasized. “By ensuring access to quality healthcare, UHC can help reduce poverty, improve productivity, and enhance overall well-being.”

Achieving UHC in Nigeria requires strong government leadership and commitment, Dr. Hassan emphasized.

He noted that the Federal Ministry of Health is implementing a sector-wide approach, integrating primary healthcare services with national policies to ensure equitable access.

“The government must play a critical role in ensuring access to quality healthcare for all Nigerians,”

“This requires effective policy implementation, robust budgeting, and collaboration among stakeholders.”Dr. Hassan said.

Dr. Hassan called on all stakeholders to play their roles in making UHC a reality.

He emphasized the importance of community engagement, effective healthcare planning, and robust policy implementation in achieving UHC.
