Washington, D.C. — October 23, 2024
In a series of candid interviews, former White House Chief of Staff General John Kelly has strongly criticized former President Donald Trump, accusing him of repeatedly insulting U.S. military personnel and undermining democratic institutions. Kelly confirmed that Trump referred to fallen soldiers as “losers” and “suckers” during private conversations, allegations that had surfaced in prior reports.
Speaking with The Atlantic, Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general, recounted instances where Trump expressed reluctance to visit military cemeteries and disdain for wounded veterans, whom he claimed Trump avoided due to their appearance. These remarks have sparked renewed concerns about Trump’s suitability for leadership, especially as he campaigns for the 2024 Republican nomination.
Kelly also highlighted Trump’s attacks on senior military officials, including General Mark Milley, whom Trump suggested should face punishment for his actions while in office. Kelly warned that Trump’s behavior posed a threat to U.S. governance and democratic processes, criticizing his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election.
Though Kelly stopped short of endorsing any political candidate, his remarks have added to the growing list of former officials voicing concerns about Trump’s leadership. These statements are expected to play a significant role in the ongoing debate over Trump’s qualifications as he seeks re-election in 2024.
