In a decisive move to enhance the quality and security of Nigerian travel documents, the Federal Government has officially approved a significant upward revision of the fees associated with obtaining Nigerian passports. This increase, which will take effect from September 1, 2024, marks a considerable adjustment in the cost of both 32-page and 64-page Nigerian Standard Passports.

According to an official statement issued on Wednesday by Kenneth Udo, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the new fees will see the cost of a 32-page passport rise to N50,000, while the 64-page passport will now be available at a fee of N100,000. This adjustment is part of broader efforts to ensure that the Nigerian passport maintains its high standard of quality and integrity, both of which are critical in the context of international travel.

Udo emphasized that the revision is designed to reflect the true cost of producing the passport, which is globally recognized for its advanced security features. The updated pricing structure is also intended to cover the increasingly sophisticated technology and materials required to produce the passports, thereby protecting the document against counterfeiting and other forms of misuse.

The NIS has called on Nigerians to be aware of the upcoming changes and to prepare accordingly, especially those who are planning to renew their passports or apply for new ones in the near future. The announcement has sparked widespread discussion, with many Nigerians expressing varied opinions on the financial implications of the new fees.

Further details on the implementation process and any additional requirements are expected to be provided by the NIS as the September 1st deadline approaches. The Federal Government and the NIS have reassured the public that the price increase is a necessary measure to sustain the credibility and reliability of the Nigerian passport, which remains a vital tool for international travel and identification.

As the implementation date draws nearer, citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official channels to ensure they are fully aware of any new developments or procedural updates related to the passport fee hike.
