Gombe State Pledges Landmark Disability Protection Law, Commission Establishment”

In a groundbreaking move, the Gombe State House of Assembly has vowed to expedite the passage of the Gombe State Disability Protection Law and establishment of the Gombe State Disability Commission.

The Speaker Abubakar Luggerewo made this pledge at a one-day committee retreat on Tuesday in Bauchi, emphasizing the assembly’s commitment to democratic values and responsiveness to the disability community.

He said the bill, prioritized for first and second reading on June 11, 2024, aims to safeguard the rights and dignity of people with disabilities.

Luggerewo assured that the assembly will work tirelessly to ensure the bill’s passage and subsequent approval by the state government.

The retreat, organized by Advocacy for Disability Act Cluster (ADAC) with USAID and Palladium support, brought together legislators to harness public hearing input on the bill.

Earlier , the Program Manager, Inclusive Friends Awareness Moses Oluwaseyi, commended Gombe State’s commitment to disability issues and expressed optimism about the state joining the league of inclusive states in Nigeria.

He said the ADAC cluster, implementing the Strengthening Civic Advocacy and Local Engagement project, remains resolute in supporting the empowerment and dreams of people with disabilities.

He urged for speedy assent upon the bill’s completion, paving the way for an agency to cater to the unique needs and welfare of the disability community.
