The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced plans to enhance security on the Third Mainland Bridge by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and solar lights by June. This measure aims to deter illegal mining activities on the infrastructure.

Umahi made this statement following a routine inspection of the under-deck project at Iddo Bridge, Carter Bridge, and the Third Mainland bridges in Lagos. He expressed satisfaction with the progress of work, particularly praising the efforts of Berger, the contractor responsible for the Iddo Bridge, Carter Bridge, and Third Mainland Bridge projects.

Regarding the ongoing construction, Umahi highlighted the near-completion of the deck job on top of the bridges, with additional work being done on the piers and pier caps beneath the deck. He emphasized the importance of addressing the condition of the piles supporting the Third Mainland Bridge, which have been affected by erosion and illegal mining. The Federal Government plans to engage a consultant for necessary repairs.

Umahi also mentioned inherited construction projects on several other bridges, including Eko Bridge, Marina Bridge, Liverpool Bridge, Iganmu Bridge, and Independence Bridge, all initially undertaken by Buildwell. He indicated upcoming discussions with Julius Berger regarding major works to be addressed.
