A tragic incident occurred in the Ungwan Maigero Community of Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, where 13-year-old Wisdom Hashimu took his own life on Thursday, June 7. This followed alleged torture by a soldier and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF).
Wisdom, accused of stealing N10,000 from a neighbor on June 1, ended his life in his family’s compound on Lafiya Sarki Street. Despite the false accusation, Hope, the neighbor, involved her boyfriend, leading to Wisdom and his brother being taken to the Civilian JTF office.
While preparing for his Junior Secondary School examinations, Wisdom was severely beaten by a soldier and JTF members, leaving him unable to walk. After receiving medical attention, he returned home, but was later found hanging in the family compound.
Wisdom’s father, Mr. Saul, condemned the Civilian JTF for taking the law into their own hands and torturing his son. He pointed out that Hope’s younger brother, who was also accused, was spared and later confessed to the crime when N9,000 was found in his possession.
The family is seeking justice for Wisdom, claiming that the torture led to his suicide. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mansir Hassan, confirmed that an investigation is underway.
